Panther Plot produce will be used in UNI dining centers and restaurants

The University of Northern Iowa Panther Plot is a reality because of the cooperation of Department of Residence Dining Services, the UNI Office of Sustainability, Center for Energy and Environmental Education, Botanical Center, Facilities Services, and First-Year Cornerstone course participants.

Produce cultivated in the plot, located south of the UNI Biology Research Complex, will provide another local food source for UNI dining services and will be sold at a local farmers market.  Planning, managing and marketing the plot production will be done by UNI students.

“We’re looking forward to having another source of local food for customers in our on-campus dining centers, restaurants and catering,” said Carol Petersen, director of dining services. “The Panther Plot will extend students’ understanding of the food cycle and managing the details of production will give students valuable experience in horticulture, food science, logistics and marketing.”

“The UNI Panther Plot garden will be a living, educational tool that will improve the community’s understanding of gardening, their health and the local food system,” said Rachel Wobeter, program assistant at the Center for Energy and Environmental Education.  “UNI’s commitment to the garden is a step in the right direction to improve the well-being of students and the community.”
According to Wobeter, produce "wish lists" were submitted by groups who will have access to the harvest.  The plant profile for 2013 will include: vegetables, herbs, melons, grasses, greens and flowers.
