The Department of Residence is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and supportive experience for all students. We offer a variety of All-Gender Housing options to meet the needs of our residents.
What is All-Gender Housing?
All-Gender Housing allows residents the option to live on campus with whomever they choose, regardless of legal sex, gender or gender identity.
Who is eligible for All-Gender Housing?
All residents are eligible to live in an inclusive space, but must opt-in to this type of housing within the housing & dining contract online. All-Gender Housing is not intended for romantic partners to live as roommates.
In which halls is All-Gender Housing offered?
All-Gender Housing is available in Lawther Hall, which offers suites with both private and semi-private bathrooms; Noehren Hall which offers pod-style bathrooms; and Panther Village, Roth Apartments and Jennings Court Apartments which all offer apartment-style living with private bathrooms in each unit.
All-Gender Housing is available within our traditional halls as well. The communities are designed as inclusive houses where students regardless of gender may share a room. Bathrooms within these communities remain gendered as male and female. (Students interested in information about a private restroom accommodation within traditional halls should contact Student Accessibility Services.)
How does roommate selection work for All-Gender Housing?
The roommate process is similar to that of all living situations on campus. However, all roommates wishing to live in an inclusive unit need to have opted-in to All-Gender Housing within the housing & dining contract. (If using Roommate Selection to search for roommates, please note that only those students who also indicated an interest in All-Gender Housing will display. You can use the Suggested Roommates function to search for, message and select a roommate.) If a roommate is not selected, or all beds within that unit haven’t been filled with pre-selected roommates, the space will remain available to be filled by another student who has opted-in to All-Gender Housing.
If a vacancy occurs, the current resident(s) is encouraged to find an agreeable roommate interested in living in an inclusive unit. If that is not possible, Residence Life will work with the occupant(s) to identify the best solution, but reserves the right to assign the room to another student who has indicated their interest in All-Gender Housing.
For support in finding an LGBTQ+ or ally roommate, please contact our Gender and Sexuality Services Coordinator.
Is inclusive space limited?
All-Gender Housing is available in most halls on a first-come, first-served basis and may be limited by space availability to meet the accommodation requests of students.
Please note that although we feel students are able to make decisions about their housing situation, the Department of Residence encourages students to maintain an open dialogue with their families so that they can be supportive of their housing decisions.
